Forum Post: Lifting Plate with pin Analysis

Dear All,

I have modelled a lifting plate as  plate elements in STAAD. WHole assembly will be lifted thru this lifting plate via  a lifting pin.

I am interested in knowing the stress values in the lifting plate.

Now modeling is not a problem but what bothers me is how to apply the pin load onto the lifting plate?

Since pin will transfer the load to the lifting plate thru bearing. The area of contact wont be pi()*dia but will be lesser than that.

Also the load of bearing will be applied onto the edge of the plate element but in STAAD we dont have option to apply load onto the edge of the plate (as far as i know) unless we model it as solid element which is not what I want.

Again, since mesh generation is not extremely fine for the hole in the plate, if I apply nodal load then it will be more like concentrated loads onto the plate instead of the pressure load on edge. And obviously meshing the hole so fine means meshing everything else to maintain aspect ratio which is not a good idea.

Added, if I apply a shear load (in plane pressure) onto the plates above the hole then also it wont represent the correct scenario.

Kindly let me know the correct and realistic way to apply the load onto the lifting plate thru the pin.

I am not planning to model the pin in STAAD, all I modelled is the lifting plate with hole. And now interested in applying the load onto the inner edge of the hole.

Thanks in advance. Any idea will be welcomed. :)
