Blog Post: Purpose of the Drawing Title Boundary

Drawing titles act as labels for drawings on sheets. Each drawing that is placed on a sheet is supposed to be labeled with a drawing title. While using the Place Drawing Title tool on drawing sheets, you must have noticed the outline that highlights the extent of referred models.  These borders serve as visual cue to distinguish the different models that have been attached to the sheet.

Imagine a scenario wherein multiple models have been attached to the drawing sheet; few with Drawing title (round bubble) placed and few without the drawing title (between, you have a check-box option in Reference Attachment Settings dialog that automatically generates a drawing title for all reference attachments when you are adding references to a sheet model .

Also, you can attach drawing titles after the references are attached (Detailing Symbols > Drawing Titles)).

You will be able to distinguish between different references by using Reference Boundary, though these are more rigid and cannot be re-sized unless you scale the reference – they cannot be ideally used as visual barriers. Due to above constraints outlines generated by making use of Place Drawing Title tool are best suited as visual aid for following reasons:

  • They are fictitious borders: If you choose the option while attaching a reference a fictitious border is created around the reference.
  • Their size does not depend on the reference: You can resize these borders at your free will.
  • They are related to the bubble and not the reference: To make the borders appear, all you need to do is to click the Place Drawing Title symbol.
  • They are not mandatory: You can add the Drawing Title symbol and associated outlines while attaching a reference or after the reference has been attached. Likewise, you can remove the drawing title without affecting the reference. Select the bubble and click Delete Element tool. You are prompted if you want to keep the reference. Click No and you can continue to use your reference.

That’s about the purpose of outlines. Here’s a quick recap about the various fields you see on the Drawing Title symbol:

  • Drawing Identifier: Unique number given to every Drawing Title symbol that is added to the sheet. Increments by one each time a new symbol is added.
  • Sheet Name: Name of the drawing sheet. It is different than the model name property.
  • Name: Unique name of the drawing title.

To place the drawing title on the sheet manually, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Go to Place Detailing Symbols > Drawing Title.
  2. Click a data point to select first corner.
  3. Click a data point to select second corner.
  4. Place the symbol.
