Hello. I noticed a strange thing regarding outcomes when measuring area in 2D .dgn-files. I was working on property boundaries that had to have specific size value. I was working in one .dgn file in which I drew the boundaries. Then I opened another .dgn file where I set the property sheet up, with coordinates and other information. I this latter .dgn file I attached the first .dgn file (the one with the boundary lines) as reference. Then when I measured the area of the boundaries I got a different value than before. It wasn't a big difference in this instance but this has happened before and then the difference was bigger. When I copied the boundaries into the property sheet .dgn-file I got the right area value. So to put it short, I have a shape that is 800 m² in a .dgn-file nr.1. When I attach that file as reference in .dgn-file nr.2 I get a value of 802 m² for the same shape. When I copy the shape from file nr.1 into file nr.2 I get 800 m² again. Do you guys know why this happens? Regards, Bjorn

ProStructures for MicroStation V8 i SELECTseries 5 (08.11.10.36) - now on Bentley SELECTserver. Artikel auf Deutsch: ProSteel / ProStructures WAS IST NEU und FIXES This release includes the following: Support of MicroStation V8i SELECTseries 1, 2 and 3 Support of ProjectWise up to SELECTseries 3 including Bill of Material, NC files, Detail Center and Detail Center Express GUI changes Split commands into ProStructures, ProSteel and ProConcrete Support of MicroStation Item Browser Support of iModel Composer and creation of iModels out of ProStructures Support of ISM SELECTseries 3 Structural Steel and Concrete (no Rebar at the moment) ProConcrete: To get an overview about the capabilities of ProConcrete, here a link to our eSeminar recorded in June 2012 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-340GDtyke4&feature=youtu.be Concrete and rebar modeling in 3D Concrete Columns Concrete Beams Concrete Pad Footings Concrete Continous Footings Slabs Panels Walls Concrete Stairs Rebar commands for Columns Beams Pad Footings (including Starter Bars and Template Ties) Slabs Panels Walls Solid Reference Command Use any kind of Solid Object as ProConcrete Concrete Object Irregular Dispatch Dispatch Rebar based on 3D Smart Lines Mechanical Devices Automatic Bar Mark Assingment Concrete Lists Bending Bar Schedules Support of Detail Center Support of Detail Center Express ProSteel: Over 250 Fixes!! ProSteel MicroStation crashed when 'seed2d' and 'seed3d' have been used. The Detail Center Express option dispatch blocks didn't work properly. One of the blocks got inserted on the zero point of the drawing instead of inside the frame. DetailCenter list didn't updated if the model view was closed. In this case the list must have been cleared or the DetailCenter must have been completely closed. Otherwise the program crashed if some operations were done (e.g. calling a preview). When 'open 2D drawing' got selected in right click context, then 2D detail center dialog closed. This removed the flexibility to go back to the model. Wrong orientation of curved shapes fixed in PSB import. The following crash has been fixed: 1. Create a new DGN using seed as "PS-S4-US-CDN_Imp". 2. Place a beam and add web angle connection at both ends using grouping ON. 3. Open 2D Detail Center (Standard). 4. Apply Standard detail style to the group. 5. In 2D Detail Center dialog, go to "Views" tab. 6. Select the View and click "Preview" from right context menu. Using -create clean drawing- on a 2D drawing the holes in shapes and plates disappeared. Using -create clean drawing- on a 2D drawing some colors have changed. I.e. for example the position flags. Performance issues with 2D views of ProSteel objects have been fixed. Using the 2D display option to show different colors for beams, columns, bracings didn't responde right. Import in Microstation Special parts did not transfered via .psb. (Before making the special part by PS_create_Spezpart the parts have been volumemodells). If a base plate connection have been created and then deleted, then it extended the column at the connection end. If a base plate connection have been created, the member properties showed wrong length. If a shear plate connection got modified, the connecting members got distorted towards connection at each and every modification. If a web angle connection got modified, then connecting members got distorted towards connection at each and every modification. If an end plate connection got applied and then canceled the same, then connecting member got extended towards connection end. Same thing happened with right click context delete connection. If match properties have been used, and a slice connection have been selected as the parent member and child member, then it didn't work as expected. In some cases connection didn't happen or a wrong connection has been created. ProSteel messed up the scale of references sometimes. Opening, saving, closing, opening again a dgn with references in pure Microstation everything is fine. Doing the same in ProSteel the scale for references got changed. If a splice connection have been applied, a modification messed up the members. If the move command have been used, it sometimes messed up connected members. Installation of the Australian localization has been fixed. The following problem has been fixed: Open Dgn file>>Go to Prosteel >>Positioning>>Positioning to all parts. 2)Go to connection center>>Column/Beam connections>>Web Result: Unhandled exception while closing "change positioning dialog box". Abnormal termination of Prosteel. The following problem with StrucLink has been fixed: 1. Open a new DGN file. 2. Place a member. 3. Go to Connection center>>StrucLink>>Export. 4. Go to PSMS main menu, File>>Close. 5. Click New file button icon. 6. Create new file. Input some name. 7. Click Save>>Open. 8. Go to Connection center>>StrucLink. Command prompt says "Unknown key-in or command" When using the option in the model to place elevation flags, if a different value has been selected for the origin point, this value got lost. Closing and reopening the dialog box, even simply closing the dialog box, caused the origin point value to reset to 0. This caused the 2D output to appear with incorrect values. Issues with Line Weight in Detail Center has been fixed. The following Detail Style Settings have been fixed: 1- Height above ToS markings. Using the text parameter $(E) in 'Descriptions-->Additional Text --> Views' with the '2D Display --> Views --> Object Display' setting 'Global Format String' to display elevation did display incorrect heights. 2- Also to use the $(E) method, labels needed to be enabled in the model before they appeared in the 2D drawing. 3- If “Name and Elevation" from '2D Display got selected --> Views --> Object Display', the same problem with incorrect elevation, plus the fact the option to remove the prefix was needed, or change it to something else than the default “EL=” that came automatically. UNDER CONSTRUCTION !!!

Here some screenshots: ISM support (Integrated Structural Detailing) Intelligent Structural Design Flexible software to integrate your workflows. Bentley’s Integrated Structural Modeling methodology maximizes the interoperability of structural information among different specialized applications, CAD and BIM platforms, and design reviews for all authors and consumers of a project’s structural information. Structural modeling, analysis, design, documentation, and detailing – within integrated and flexible workflows – empowers intelligent structural design practices. The benefits are dynamic collaboration and increased data reuse among structural engineers, detailers, and fabricators. The results are more efficient delivery of high quality designs and well-coordinated and accurate documentation, along with increased project productivity, reduced errors, and improved quality control. Maintaining compatibility with architects and other disciplines extends these benefits across the entire project team. More information about ISM can be found here: http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Promo/ISM/default.htm This technology is now implemented in ProStructures. The reverse installation sequence will cause an error when loading ProStructures from AutoPLANT via AutoPLANT 3D>Structural command. If ProStructures 8.11.2.23 was installed before AutoPLANT 8.11.6.30, then ProStructures should be uninstalled and then reinstalled. When both ProStructures 8.11.2.23 and AutoPLANT 8.11.6.30 are installed on the same machine, then launching ProStructures from its desktop icon will not launch the ProStructures program directly. Instead, it will launch AutoPLANT from which the user must then load ProStructures via AutoPLANT 3D>Structural command. Since AutoPLANT 8.11.6.30 does not support AutoCAD 2010, it should not be installed with ProStructures 8.11.2.23 running on AutoCAD 2010. This document contains the following information: Dependencies on Microsoft Internet Explorer DLLs MicroStation SDK --> Installer Note Directory Structure Support and Services Information Using the Online Help Installer Note ProStructures is designed so it can be installed and safely coexist on the same workstation as an existing ProStructures Release. It will not attempt to upgrade or uninstall an existing commercial release, and by default it installs its program files to different locations than the commercial release. When you install ProStructures V8i it creates the registry entries responsible for file associations. ProStructures also creates the registry keys for VBA-initiated launching. For additional information on installing ProStructures, see the ProStructures QuickInstall document. The snapshot of this command for MicroStation version is shown as following: The snapshot of this command for autocad version is shown as following: Continuous footing reinforcement command Information about the footing’s reinforcing will be entered on this tab. Separate sections will be provided for top and bottom, longitudinal and transverse reinforcing. Also included are sections for concrete clearance values and user preferences for calculating lap splices for the longitudinal bars. Clearances: - Top (Length/Distance Combo List) - Minimum clearance from the reinforcing to the top of the footing. Entered by the user. - Bottom (Length/Distance Combo List) - Minimum clearance from the reinforcing to the bottom of the footing. Entered by the user. -Side (Length/Distance Combo List) - Minimum clearance from the reinforcing to the sides of the footing. Entered by the user. - End (Length/Distance Combo List) - Minimum clearance from the reinforcing to the ends of the footing. Entered by the user. Top and Bottom Rebar: Longitudinal - Qty (Numeric:Integer) – Quantity of longitudinal bars present in the zone. If quantity is zero, the spacing and offset values will be used in conjunction with the width of the footing to calculate the number of bars required. Entered by the user. - Bar Size (Bar Size Combo List) – The size of the bar. Entered by the user. - Spacing (Length/Distance or Spacing Formula) – A value indicating how the longitudinal bars are to be spaced across the width of the footing. Only used when the quantity is set to zero. Entered by the user. Valid entries include lengths and variable or zone spacing formulas. - Start Offset (Check Box) – Enables or disables the start and end offset edit fields. If disabled, the start and end offset values will be set to half of the spacing. If enabled, the user will be able to override these values. - Start Offset (Length/Distance) – Distance from the side of the footing to the first longitudinal bar. - End Offset (Length/Distance) – Distance from the side of the footing to the last longitudinal bar. - Lap Method (Combo List) – Allows the user to choose the method of entering the lap length. Valid values are: - Length – Value entered in the Lap Value field will be interpreted as a simple length. - Bar Diameter – Value entered in the Lap Value field will be interpreted as a bar diameter, and the lap length will be calculated by multiplying the bar diameter by the value entered. - Lap Table - Lap Value – Lap length to be used when calculating lap splices. The format of this field will change depending on the lap method selected. - Stock length (Length/Distance) - The stock length for the given bar size. The stock length for each size is set up in the rebar code definition and can be over ridden to produce a different calculation. This is a required field, and its length must be less than or equal to the mill length. - Mill Length (Length/Distance) - The mill length for the given bar size. The mill length for each size is set up in the rebar code definition and can be over ridden to produce a different calculation. This is a required field, and its length must be greater than or equal to the Stock Length. Transverse - Bar Size (Bar Size Combo List) – The size of the bar. Entered by the user. - Spacing (Length/Distance or Spacing Formula) – A value indicating how the transverse bars are to be spaced along the length of the footing. Entered by the user. Valid entries include lengths and variable or zone spacing formulas. - Start Offset (Check Box) – Enables or disables the start and end offset edit fields. If disabled, the start and end offset values will be set to half of the spacing. If enabled, the user will be able to override these values. - Start Offset (Length/Distance) – Distance from the end of the footing to the first transverse bar. - End Offset (Length/Distance) – Distance from the end of the footing to the last transverse bar. - Type (Combo List) – Indicates the shape of the transverse bar. Valid choices are: - Straight – Straight, with optional end conditions. - U-Bar – U-shaped bar with the vertical leg lengths based on the depth of the footing minus the top and bottom clearances. Can optionally have end conditions. - Closed (Bottom zone only) – Closed tie with optional end conditions. Lap Splice Preferences: - Maximum Stock (Check Box) – Causes the program to maximize the number of stock bars and minimize the number of laps. % Over – (Numeric:Percentage) – Specifies how much the program is allowed to exceed the stock length in order to save a lap on the last bar of a run. Only enabled if the Maximum Stock option is selected. - Uniform Length (Check Box) – Causes the program to use the assigned stock length to calculate all bars with one uniform length. - Stagger Laps (Check Box) – This option causes adjacent bars to not be spliced at the same location. Not available when the Uniform Length option is selected. Stagger Laps (Length/Distance) – Allows the user to specify how far apart the laps on adjacent bars should be. Only enabled if the Stagger Laps option is selected. Miscellaneous: - Rounding Factor (Length/Distance) - All main steel bar lengths (not stirrups and ties) may be rounded to the entered length. For imperial lengths, the valid rounding factor ranges for 1" to 12". For metric lengths, the rounding factor ranges from 5mm to 300mm in increments of 5mm. - Seismic (Check Box) - If this button is turned on, seismic hook lengths will be used for stirrup and tie types that require 135 degree hooks. If this button is off, standard 135-degree hook lengths will be used. - Bar Calculations (Combo List) - This option determines whether the main steel bars' lengths are to be calculated using clear span or grid to grid span dimension. Clearances: - Edge (Length/Distance) – Minimum clearance from the reinforcing to the end of the beam. Entered by the user. - Top (Length/Distance) – Minimum clearance from the reinforcing to the top of the beam. Enhancement in "Workframe" dialog: User need to select the base point of the work frame and the x axis direction of the work frame. In the “ProSteel work frame” dialog, hold “Ctrl” will click the in the “Length”, ”Width”, ”Height” combo boxes’ dropdown list, the program will ask user to select the shapes which are used to define the work frame. After user select the target shapes, a work frame will be created by the start and end point of the selected vertical shapes. New command: Isolate: The command will allow user to select the target part and “isolate the part” in 4 views. (Front, Top ,Left ,ISO ). The ISO view should be in “Transparent” or “Model” render mode by default (on MicroStation). After the command executed, the other member in the model except the selected one (or some accompanied parts. See detailed definition below) will be hidden. The command will save the new 4 views as a view group as “Isolate view group”. The view settings will be persistent after user select the “save setting” command. BUT the hidden state of the previous isolated part(s) will not be recovered. The command will invoked by select and right click the menu. The command will has a main menu: Isolate view and some sub menus: "Single part" "By connection" "By groups” “By groups and adjacent parts" “By assemblies” "By assemblies and adjacent parts " Here is the functionality for each option: Single part Isolate the single part and fit it as center on each view. By connection If the selected part belongs to one or more connections, isolate the part and all the part belongs to that connection(s). If the parts belongs to multiple connection. By Group If the selected part is belongs to one or more groups, the parts belongs to the group(s) will also be isolated By groups and adjacent parts In addition to the parts in “By connection”, also isolate the parts that has a “logic link” with the parts inside the group. EVEN that part is not the selected one. By Assemblies If the selected the part is part of an assembly, isolate the assembly’s parts also By assemblies and adjacent parts In addition to the parts in “By Assemblies”, also isolate the parts that has a “logic link” with the parts inside the group. EVEN that part is not the selected one. New command: Drop Object (MicroStation only) This command is used to downgrade/drop steel standard shapes, user shapes, roof/wall panels, combined shapes and welded shapes to MicroStation cells. User EED's for Concrete objects EED’s can now be created and assigned to both concrete single parts and groups, and the data can be extracted to an external partlist/B.O.M. When generating “PC Create Concrete Database”, the extracted EED data is placed in the “ConcretePartlistDetail” table of the partlist *.mdb. Also, EED related fields are available when designing a bill of material report template *.lst. 2D Detailing enhancements ProStructures SELECTseries 5 for AutoCAD Unlimited number of user defined line types, hatch styles and sketch display styles. These user styles are a combination of basic settings (e.g. line type, colour, line weight) and they can be addressed in other detailing settings. 3D workframe object has the option to define the 2D output drawing type (elevation/plan view or section). Additional marker symbols in 3D to recognize these types in different view directions. Support of line weights in 2D display Grid axis display can be controlled in the detail style. This includes line types, distances and position of the grid axis (e.g. top of view / right side). Grid axis display is available for more kinds of 2D details. Manual dimension points and reference points can be organized in selection groups. This allows to distinguish between different dimension points and their references in the final 2D output (individual settings and dimension lines are possible). Forum Post: Torsion on beam
Having some trouble with torsional analysis. I am analyzing a beam that is supporting a brick veneer offset about 10 inches from the centerline of the beam. I've attempted to create a similar torsion on the beam by applying eccentric point loads every foot. Is there a better way to model this? I am new to RAM elements and I am having trouble making this work. When performing the analysis and design (torsional design box is checked), the deflection is almost zero and is not reasonable. The W16 beam is simply supported and the cantilevering members are fixed to the W16.

Forum Post: RE: Torsion on beam
There is no convenient way to apply uniform torque to a beam in Ram Elements. Member loads are always applied through the section centroid, so the only way to get torsion is by adding periodic loads that are offset from the beam like you have done. You need to make sure it's stable (i.e. the ends of the beam fixed in torsion) to get realistic results. Also make sure it is analyzed as a 3D frame.

Forum Post: Using a Cell as a Pattern not working for certain cells
Hello all, I am having an issue with using certain cells as patterns in my files. I have attached the Patterns file with the cells in question, as well as our 2D Seed file to see if anyone can replicate my issue or see what may be going wrong. For whatever reason the Dots and Earth cells can not be used to pattern areas as far as we can tell. We can however use the RipRap, FM and CA files to pattern areas. Has anyone encountered this or know what may be going wrong? Thanks, -Daniel T. Warren communities.bentley.com/.../Patterns.dgn communities.bentley.com/.../HWC-Seed-2D.dgn
